SOE Alumni Association

The SOE Alumni Association supports SOE’s mission of effectively preparing educators and other education personnel for professional performance in diverse cultural contexts. It serves as a connection for which SOE alumni can give back to their alma mater by sharing their talents, resources, etc. in different SOE events. It further serves as a source for developing alumni pride, spirit, and life-long commitments to the School of Education.

SOE Alumni Update - August 23

GINEN I HILA' I MAGA'TAOTAO SIHA SEEKS NEW MEMBERS

Guam's foremost storytelling group, Ginen I Hila' I Maga'taotao Siha (From the Tongues of the Noble People) that represented Guam at the Tenth Festival of the Pacific Arts held in American Samoa in 2008, is seeking new members through an audition at 7pm on Thursday, September 3, at the University of Guam's Humanities and Social Sciences Building, Room 101.

Auditions are open to those who can present a story in any format such as puppetry, mime, music, instrumentation, and props and the subject matter may dwell on jokes, riddles, personal experiences, family pastimes, ghost stories, superstitious beliefs, traditions, children and/or adult oriented, gender distinctive, myths, legends, the sharing of an heirloom, artifact, photo, souvenir, art piece, knickknack, decoration, and food as well as oral histories handed down from generations to generations. Proficiency in CHamoru is not a requirement. Interviews will also be conducted by the group.

The group meets on the first and third Thursdays of every month at 7pm at the University of Guam. There is a yearly membership dues payable at its election meeting in November.

Plans are underway for the second annual Fright Night, participation in the Guam Micronesian Island Fair and the Estorian I Tasi yan I Tano' at Gef Pa'go in Inalahan, as well as preparations for participation at the Eleventh Festival of the Pacific Arts in the Solomon Islands in 2012.

EVENTS THIS WEEK

Goya Exhibit at Isla – Opening Reception Aug. 20

The Isla Center for the Arts at the University of Guam hosts the opening reception for Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes: Los Caprichos on Thursday, Aug. 20. The opening reception begins at 7pm at the Isla Center for the Arts House #15, Dean's Circle. The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 25, 2009.

"Stayin Alive" -- the Australian Bee Gees Show -- on Aug. 21 and 22

The show will be held at the Sheraton Guam Laguna Resort's ballroom in Tamuning. The band has been hailed as the best Bee Gees tribute in the world and has been the subject of several documentaries. Tickets are $35 and VIP $75. Call the Foundation at 735-2957.

Mathematics Colloquium Lecture Series Aug 21

Dr. Yoshifumi Takenouchi, Institute of Mathematics, University of the Philippines will present on, “Representation of Period Doubling by digraphs and Characteristic Polynomials” during the first Mathematics Colloquium of AY 2009-2010. The presentation will be held on Aug. 21 in the Science Building , Room 120 3:30-4:20pm.

Board of Regents Regular Meeting – Aug. 20

The regular meeting of the Board of Regents will be held Thursday, August 20, at 5:30 p.m. in AV Room #1 of the RFK Library in the Tan Siu Lin Building .

Alyssa Marshell - Master of Science Thesis Proposal Presentation – Aug 20

Marine Lab student Alyssa Marshell will give her thesis proposal presentation on: Movement and life-history traits of the unicornfish: Tåtaga' (Naso unicornis) and Hangon (Naso lituratus) on Thursday, August 20 at 9:30am in Marine Lab classroom 205. Her advisor is Dr. Jenny McIlwain.

Paulino Presents PhD Research – Aug. 21

Yvette Paulino, a UOG graduate, will present her PhD research, “DESCRIBING AND MEASURING VARIABILITY OF ARECA CATECHU (BETEL NUT) CHEWING IN MICRONESIAN POPULATIONS IN GUAM” The research seminar will take place on Friday, August 21st, at 2:00pm in ALS Room 125A.

RESEARCH, GRANTS & PUBLICATIONS
Guam Navy and UOG Partner to Conserve Native Tree
The University of Guam has completed the establishment of a conservation planting of Guam’s endangered fadang tree on the island of Tinian. Guam Navy has funded the entire project and provided access to their lands in northern Tinian for implementing this important effort to help stave off the ongoing threats to survival of the species. USDA Funds Weevil Control Experiments
Dr. Gadi V. P. Reddy of the Western Pacific Tropical Research Center , UOG has been awarded a $75,000 USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service grant to address the weevil threat to palms in the region. This miniature menace is especially troubling for nursery owners. Read more at

New SOE Dean & Upcoming Language Arts Conference

The SOE Alumni Association welcomes the incoming SOE Dean, Dr. Elizabeth M. Hawthorne!



Dr. Hawthorne will arrive August 14 and will begin work on Monday, August 17. She holds a PhD in Higher Education from the University of Michigan , and M.Ed. in Educational Psychology from Temple University in Philadelphia and a BS in Education from Tufts University . She has served as a dean or associate dean at Ellis University ( Chicago ), National-Louis University ( Chicago ), Penn State (PA), and Kaplan University ( Chicago ). She has been a team chair and evaluator for the North Central Association of College and Schools (WASC equivalent for the central US) and led National-Louis University through a successful application process resulting in NCATE accreditation. With her experience in hiring and evaluating faculty, strategic planning, curriculum development, distance education and technology use, we look forward to working with her as she and our School of Education lead the change that will take place over the next few years on our island.She will be located in the Dean's office in the School of Education building. UPCOMING LANGUAGE ARTS CONFERENCE:

The 22nd Annual Regional Language Arts Conference (LAC) will be held Friday-Saturday, November 6 & 7, 2009. The theme is “Multicultural Approaches in Language Arts Education.” The LAC is an opportunity for professional growth and enrichment in literacy for educators in the Western Pacific region. Presentations will focus on reading and writing across the content areas with particular attention on approaches in the multicultural context. Proposals for individual and panel presentations on innovative reaching strategies, research reports, and practical workshops are welcome. Presentations will be scheduled in forty-five minute blocks.
