Bright Pass of the International Space Station

If you’re an early riser, you might want to plan to be outside looking up this coming Friday morning, 9 October, at around 5:30 a.m. The ISS is making a close pass overhead and will shine at an incredible –3.3 magnitude which is almost as bright as Venus gets.

The ISS will appear 10 degrees above the southwestern horizon at 5:34 a.m. on Friday morning. It will then track high in the western sky (opposite where the Sun will rise). It will reach a maximum altitude of 60 degrees at 5:37 a.m. and disappear over the north-northeastern horizon at 5:40 a.m. If it isn’t very cloudy, at that magnitude you’re pretty much guaranteed to see it.
