The SOE Alumni Association supports SOE’s mission of effectively preparing educators and other education personnel for professional performance in diverse cultural contexts. It serves as a connection for which SOE alumni can give back to their alma mater by sharing their talents, resources, etc. in different SOE events. It further serves as a source for developing alumni pride, spirit, and life-long commitments to the School of Education.

SOE Alumni Update - March 11

2nd Annual MARC and Charter Day Event – March 11

The second annual MARC and Charter Day dinner will be held on Thursday, March 11.

Festivities begin with cocktails 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner and program from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Marriott Resort and Spa and tickets are $100. Proceeds support the MARC scholarship program. The event honors Francis X. Hezel, Emilie Johnston, and Carlos Taitano. For more information, call Heidi at 687-4505.

UOG Island Theatre presents the classic Spanish tragedy THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA by Federico Garcia Lorca. By introducing elements of the guerilla marketing approach into your marketing program, including word of mouth campaigns and promoting “buzz”, you can more effectively influence the buying behavior of individuals. UOG Offers Two Trip to India and Nepal in the Spring and Summer of 2010

The University of Guam is offering two very distinctive educational trips to India and Nepal . The first (short) trip is arranged to happen during spring break (10 days: March 26-April 4) and will take participants to Hardwar , India where the famed Kumbla Mela festival is being held. The second trip during the summer will travel through India and Nepal . Participants can take the course for academic credit (3 UOG credits—graduate or undergraduate) or for non-credit with no tuition charge. Families are also welcome to join the group. Thesis Defense – March 16

Alyssa Marshell will defend her master's thesis on the 16th of March (Tuesday), 10:00 AM at Room 205 of the Marine Laboratory. Title: Population dynamics of two species of Naso (Teleostei: Acanthuridae), with an emphasis on movement patterns, population estimates and distribution and abundance.

GRANTS

The Western Pacific Tropical Research Center recently received notification that three research grant awards were funded through the Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture Research Program. UOG WPTRC will receive about half a million dollars in funding for the following projects:

· Dr. Golabi: $146,135 "Evaluating the Environmental Impact of Land Application of Composted Organic Waste for Improving Soil Quality and Agricultural Sustainability in the Tropical Island of Guam "

· Dr. Ross Miller $138,795.90 "Variation in Pentalonia aphids and Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV) transmission inPacific Islands ".

· Dr. Jian Yang: $ 160,338 "Identifying marker compounds and indicators in noni (Morinda citrifolia) products for shelf-life determination and quality control"

Guam Society of America Scholarships

he Guam Society of America will be awarding $5000 in education scholarships for 2010. There are two separate packets: 1) High School or GED Students - for those who are just graduating high school or starting college and 2) College Students - those already enrolled in college. Eligibility requirements are outlined in the packets as well as all application instructions and required documents. American Studies Association of Japan to Hold Annual Research Conference at UOG in March 20 - 21

The American Studies Association of Japan, one of the largest academic associations for "Americanists" in Japan , will hold its annual research conference outside of Japan . The University of Guam will be the venue for the 2010 conference which will be held March 20 and 21. Approximately 20-35 researchers will convene at the University to present results of research on a wide variety of aspects of American studies, including U.S. culture, politics, foreign policy, language, and education. The keynote address will be delivered by Mr. Koki Kobayashi, Member, House of Representatives of Japan. He is a senior member of the Japanese parliament and one of the senior leaders of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) which took control of the Japanese government last fall. "One reason for the selection of Guam as the first meeting of the association outside of Japan is the growing interest in the realignment of U.S. military forces in the western Pacific among Japanese Americanists and JDP political leaders," said Michael Stoil, assistant professor of political science at UOG.

EVENTS THIS WEEK

Chemistry Titration Practice Session: March 5th at 2-5pm
The Chemistry Program at UOG will be hosting a Titration Competition for High School students on the 9th of March 2010. In order to prepare students for this competition, the chemistry program will hold a practice session on March 5th from 2.00pm –5.00pm. The practice session will be held in Room SC230, Science Building , at UOG. This session is open to all those students who will compete in the main Titration event. In order for your school team(s) to attend the practice run, we will require their names to be sent to us, together with their completed entry forms by March 1st. The practice session is designed to give students more ‘hands-on’ experience in titration and steps in calculation that will be involved. The practice session was also held last year, 2009, and those that attended found it extremely useful. Charter Day 5K – Saturday, March 6 at 6:00 a.m.

Charter Day Outreach Event at GPO – Saturday, March 6 from 10am to 2pm.

Renowned photographer Wayne Quilliam, the 2009 Australian Aboriginal Artist of the Year, will be speaking about the apology of the Australian government to the Indigenous peoples of Australia ’s Stolen Generation in the CLASS Lecture Hall at 7pm on Monday, March 8. Mr. Quilliam will also present an Artist’s retrospective on Wednesday evening, March 10.

Call for Proposals: Child Care Givers Professional Leadership Conference

The Guam Child Care & Development Association (GCCDA) committee is currently planning their "Child Care Giver Appreciation Week.”

On April 9 and 10, GCCDA will hold the 2010 Professional Leadership Conference at the University of Guam, School of Education.

The organization is seeking presenters for this year's conference.
The theme this year is: "Beyond Quality Care: Promoting Healthy Behaviors in Young Children."

Condolences for Lourdes "Lou" Leon Guerrero

The SOE Alumni family extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of Lourdes "Lou" Leon Guerrero, our beloved and dedicated SOE Alumni recruiter and member. Lou was called to her eternal rest on February 26, 2010. She will always be remembered. God Bless her and her family. May she rest in peace.
