2nd Annual MARC and Charter Day Event – March 11

The second annual MARC and Charter Day dinner will be held on Thursday, March 11.

Festivities begin with cocktails 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner and program from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Marriott Resort and Spa and tickets are $100. Proceeds support the MARC scholarship program. The event honors Francis X. Hezel, Emilie Johnston, and Carlos Taitano. For more information, call Heidi at 687-4505.

The Isla Center for the Arts presents the 12^th Isla Art-a-thon Spring Exhibit featuring 67 works of art produced by the students from the Guam Public School System who participated in this year’s Isla Art-a-thon. UOG Offers Two Trip to India and Nepal in the Spring and Summer of 2010

The University of Guam is offering two very distinctive educational trips to India and Nepal . The first (short) trip is arranged to happen during spring break (10 days: March 26-April 4) and will take participants to Hardwar , India where the famed Kumbla Mela festival is being held. The second trip during the summer will travel through India and Nepal . Participants can take the course for academic credit (3 UOG credits—graduate or undergraduate) or for non-credit with no tuition charge. Families are also welcome to join the group. Thesis Defense – March 16

Alyssa Marshell will defend her master's thesis on the 16th of March (Tuesday), 10:00 AM at Room 205 of the Marine Laboratory. Title: Population dynamics of two species of Naso (Teleostei: Acanthuridae), with an emphasis on movement patterns, population estimates and distribution and abundance.

GRANTS

The Western Pacific Tropical Research Center recently received notification that three research grant awards were funded through the Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture Research Program. UOG WPTRC will receive about half a million dollars in funding for the following projects:

· Dr. Golabi: $146,135 "Evaluating the Environmental Impact of Land Application of Composted Organic Waste for Improving Soil Quality and Agricultural Sustainability in the Tropical Island of Guam "

· Dr. Ross Miller $138,795.90 "Variation in Pentalonia aphids and Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV) transmission inPacific Islands ".

· Dr. Jian Yang: $ 160,338 "Identifying marker compounds and indicators in noni (Morinda citrifolia) products for shelf-life determination and quality control"

Guam Society of America Scholarships
the Guam Society of America will be awarding $5000 in education scholarships for 2010. There are two separate packets: 1) High School or GED Students - for those who are just graduating high school or starting college and 2) College Students - those already enrolled in college. American Studies Association of Japan to Hold Annual Research Conference at UOG in March 20 - 21

The American Studies Association of Japan, one of the largest academic associations for "Americanists" in Japan , will hold its annual research conference outside of Japan . The University of Guam will be the venue for the 2010 conference which will be held March 20 and 21. Approximately 20-35 researchers will convene at the University to present results of research on a wide variety of aspects of American studies, including U.S. culture, politics, foreign policy, language, and education. The keynote address will be delivered by Mr. Koki Kobayashi, Member, House of Representatives of Japan. He is a senior member of the Japanese parliament and one of the senior leaders of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) which took control of the Japanese government last fall. "One reason for the selection of Guam as the first meeting of the association outside of Japan is the growing interest in the realignment of U.S. military forces in the western Pacific among Japanese Americanists and JDP political leaders," said Michael Stoil, assistant professor of political science at UOG.

Chemistry Titration Practice Session: March 5th at 2-5pm
The Chemistry Program at UOG will be hosting a Titration Competition for High School students on the 9th of March 2010. In order to prepare students for this competition, the chemistry program will hold a practice session on March 5th from 2.00pm –5.00pm. The practice session will be held in Room SC230, Science Building , at UOG. This session is open to all those students who will compete in the main Titration event. In order for your school team(s) to attend the practice run, we will require their names to be sent to us, together with their completed entry forms by March 1st. The practice session is designed to give students more ‘hands-on’ experience in titration and steps in calculation that will be involved. The practice session was also held last year, 2009, and those that attended found it extremely useful. The Guam Child Care & Development Association (GCCDA) committee is currently planning their "Child Care Giver Appreciation Week.”

On April 9 and 10, GCCDA will hold the 2010 Professional Leadership Conference at the University of Guam, School of Education.

The organization is seeking presenters for this year's conference.
The theme this year is: "Beyond Quality Care: Promoting Healthy Behaviors in Young Children."

For the 5th consecutive year, UOG was designated a “low-risk auditee” for federal grants and contracts, which is no small feat as UOG manages 110 grants worth $29M. The UOG Fine Arts Faculty Biennial Open through Feb. 26The Isla Center for the Arts at the University of Guam presents The UOG Fine Arts Faculty Biennial beginning Feb. 4. The exhibit includes recent works created by the fine arts faculty members at the University of Guam . Full-time professors Jose Babauta, Lewis Rifkowitz, Ric R. Castro as well as adjunct instructors Janny L. Cann, Victor Consaga, and Perry Perez are featured in this display that includes drawings, paintings, ceramic vessels, sculptures, as well as mixed media works. The exhibit will be open through February 26, 2010.

The Kumbla Mela is the largest religious gathering in the world; millions of people gather over a three month period every twelve years at one of four cities in India ; dating back for at least two thousand years, holy men and religious teachers from all over India gather and share their spiritual knowledge. The group will visit as many camps and meet with as many teachers as our week long stay permits. It is a festive time when days and nights are filled with music, singing, theatre dramas, and religious spectacles. See www.kumbhamela.net for more information and photos of the gathering.

Call for Entries: The UOG Women and Gender Studies program is looking for artists to participate in this unique poster contest. The winning posters will be used to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects for women and girls in Guam public schools as well as UOG and GCC.

The competition is open to girls and women in public middle schools and high schools in Guam as well as freshman and sophomore women enrolled at GCC or UOG. The poster design should focus on the positive aspects of STEM subjects for girls and women. Designs might include facts and myths regarding women and girls in STEM fields, foreground local women working in STEM professions, images of girls doing science and having fun and/or the benefits for girls and women who enroll in STEM subjects. UOG TO WELCOME FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR IN FALL 2010 The University of Guam School of Business and Public Administration will welcome Fulbright Scholar-In-Residence Luz T. Suplico, PhD, for the fall 2010 semester. As a 2010-11 Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence, Suplico will engage in collaborative research with fellow faculty members, and teach international business and marketing courses within the School of Business and Public Administration. Her areas of specialization include international marketing, international business, and export marketing. She is a fulltime professor in the Marketing Management Department at De La Salle University in the Philippines , and has taught at Korea ’s Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
