SOE Alumni Association

The SOE Alumni Association supports SOE’s mission of effectively preparing educators and other education personnel for professional performance in diverse cultural contexts. It serves as a connection for which SOE alumni can give back to their alma mater by sharing their talents, resources, etc. in different SOE events. It further serves as a source for developing alumni pride, spirit, and life-long commitments to the School of Education.

SOE Alumni Update - September 24

UOG Fall 2009 Enrollment up 4.8%
Highest Enrollment in Ten Years

The University of Guam welcomes 3,550 students to campus for the Fall 2009 semester, a 4.8% increase over the prior year and the highest enrollment since 1999.

“The Fall 2009 enrollment numbers continue a trend of increasing enrollment over multiple years,” said UOG President Robert Underwood. “The quality of our programs and multiple outreach efforts at various levels continue to attract students to campus, including the 781 new undergraduate students who chose to come to the University of Guam this semester.”

Of the 3550 students enrolled for Fall 2009, 61% are female and 39% are male, while 92% describe themselves as Asians or Pacific Islanders. Additionally, 134 students transferred to UOG from other institutions, an increase of 34% over the Fall 2008 figure of 98.

Bookstore Closed for Inventory Sept. 23-30
September 21 & 22 Bookstore Hours of Operation 8am - 12noon. September 23-30, 2009 CLOSED FOR INVENTORY. The Bookstore will reopen on October 1, 2009. For emergency items such as computest forms, blue book, or textbooks please knock on the door or call 735-2931/2934/2935/2941 and bookstore staff will assist you.

Master’s Thesis

Cimeon Frank Caballes will defend his master's thesis on September 25th at 9:00 AM in Room 205 of the Marine Laboratory, University of Guam . His thesis is entitled: The Role of Chemical Signals on the Behavior of the Crown-of-Thorns Seastar, Acanthaster planci.

UOG Green Day- this Wednesday!

The President establishes UOG Green Day each Wednesday to celebrate pride in the University of Guam . Wear green, wear a UOG pin, a UOG shirt or other item to promote UOG. Our first official UOG Green Day is Sept. 23. Biba UOG!

UOG ISLAND THEATRE
E. Katherine Kerr's JUNO'S SWANS opens on Thursday, September 24th and runs through Saturday, September 26th. It continues its run on Wednesday, September 30th and runs through Saturday, October 3rd. All performances begin at 8:00 pm. Tickets are available at the door one half-hour before curtain. Tickets: $7.50, $5.00 (students). ALL UOG STUDENTS ADMITTED FREE!

Second CNAS RESEARCH CONFERENCE Call for papers
The College of Natural and Applied Sciences will host its Research Conference on Jan. 28, 2010.This conference will be preceded by a grant-writing workshop (Jan 11-12) organized by T-STAR and held in the same venue. Guam National Guard Mobil Lab at UOG Oct. 1

The 94th Civil Support Team-Weapons of Mass Destruction, Guam National Guard will present an overview of their capabilities for disaster response to students of UOG at the field house on 01 Oct 2009. The Team will display their Mobile Laboratory and several hazard assessment instruments used to detect and identify chemical, biological and radiological hazards. This briefing is intended to inform UOG students of technology and techniques used in emergency response as well as career opportunities available in the National Guard. If you like to watch "CSI", come see the real deal...CST!

Green Project Incentive – Apply for a Grant! – Deadline Oct. 16
There are six $4,285 grants available to faculty and staff to support sustainability work. Projects should be completed by June 30, 2010. Focus areas for projects include:

· integrating sustainability into curriculum,

· energy conservation,

· public awareness,

· alternative energy,

· waste management,

· campus landscaping.

To apply, please submit a 1-2 page proposal to uoggreen@uguam.uog.edu. Proposals are due Friday, October 16, with awards to be announced in early November. If part or all of the money is needed for upfront costs, please attach a budget to your proposal. Selected applicants will contract with the University to provide services. This program is funded through a grant from the Department of the Interior. Questions? Library Display Celebrates Signing of the U.S. Constitution

The anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution is Sept. 17. The Library has created an exhibit to focus on the anniversary so that professors and students can use the exhibit to incorporate discussions of the Constitution into their classes.
