SOE Alumni Association

The SOE Alumni Association supports SOE’s mission of effectively preparing educators and other education personnel for professional performance in diverse cultural contexts. It serves as a connection for which SOE alumni can give back to their alma mater by sharing their talents, resources, etc. in different SOE events. It further serves as a source for developing alumni pride, spirit, and life-long commitments to the School of Education.

SOE Alumni Update - September 24

UOG Fall 2009 Enrollment up 4.8%
Highest Enrollment in Ten Years

The University of Guam welcomes 3,550 students to campus for the Fall 2009 semester, a 4.8% increase over the prior year and the highest enrollment since 1999.

“The Fall 2009 enrollment numbers continue a trend of increasing enrollment over multiple years,” said UOG President Robert Underwood. “The quality of our programs and multiple outreach efforts at various levels continue to attract students to campus, including the 781 new undergraduate students who chose to come to the University of Guam this semester.”

Of the 3550 students enrolled for Fall 2009, 61% are female and 39% are male, while 92% describe themselves as Asians or Pacific Islanders. Additionally, 134 students transferred to UOG from other institutions, an increase of 34% over the Fall 2008 figure of 98.

Master’s Thesis

Cimeon Frank Caballes will defend his master's thesis on September 25th at 9:00 AM in Room 205 of the Marine Laboratory, University of Guam . His thesis is entitled: The Role of Chemical Signals on the Behavior of the Crown-of-Thorns Seastar, Acanthaster planci.

UOG Green Day- this Wednesday!

The President establishes UOG Green Day each Wednesday to celebrate pride in the University of Guam . Wear green, wear a UOG pin, a UOG shirt or other item to promote UOG. Our first official UOG Green Day is Sept. 23. Biba UOG!

UOG ISLAND THEATRE
E. Katherine Kerr's JUNO'S SWANS opens on Thursday, September 24th and runs through Saturday, September 26th. It continues its run on Wednesday, September 30th and runs through Saturday, October 3rd. All performances begin at 8:00 pm. Tickets are available at the door one half-hour before curtain. Tickets: $7.50, $5.00 (students). ALL UOG STUDENTS ADMITTED FREE!

The College of Natural and Applied Sciences will host its Research Conference on Jan. 28, 2010.This conference will be preceded by a grant-writing workshop (Jan 11-12) organized by T-STAR and held in the same venue. Guam National Guard Mobil Lab at UOG Oct. 1

The 94th Civil Support Team-Weapons of Mass Destruction, Guam National Guard will present an overview of their capabilities for disaster response to students of UOG at the field house on 01 Oct 2009. The Team will display their Mobile Laboratory and several hazard assessment instruments used to detect and identify chemical, biological and radiological hazards. This briefing is intended to inform UOG students of technology and techniques used in emergency response as well as career opportunities available in the National Guard. If you like to watch "CSI", come see the real deal...CST!

Green Project Incentive – Apply for a Grant! – Deadline Oct. 16
There are six $4,285 grants available to faculty and staff to support sustainability work. Projects should be completed by June 30, 2010. Focus areas for projects include:

· integrating sustainability into curriculum,

· energy conservation,

· public awareness,

· alternative energy,

· waste management,

· campus landscaping.

To apply, please submit a 1-2 page proposal to uoggreen@uguam.uog.edu. Proposals are due Friday, October 16, with awards to be announced in early November. If part or all of the money is needed for upfront costs, please attach a budget to your proposal. Selected applicants will contract with the University to provide services. This program is funded through a grant from the Department of the Interior. Questions? Library Display Celebrates Signing of the U.S. Constitution

The anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution is Sept. 17. The Library has created an exhibit to focus on the anniversary so that professors and students can use the exhibit to incorporate discussions of the Constitution into their classes.

The SOE Alumni Association held its executive meeting with the School of Education Dean, Dr. Elizabeth "Liz" Hawthorne, on September 7, 2009 at the Guam Reef Hotel's Alize Restaurant. Various alumni issues and activities were discussed, and the executive officers were pleased that Dr. Hawthorne showed her support for the association's goals. We look forward to future meetings with her, as we collaborate to ensure that we are making a difference, to give back to our Alma Mater, and so much more!

MARC Seminar – Sept. 4

There will be a MARC Occasional Seminar by Dr. Verena Keck, from the University of Heidelberg and Goethe University of Frankfurt, Germany, entitled "Chamorro cultural concepts and local interpretations: A medical-anthropological approach to neurodegenerative disease on Guam", on Friday, September 4, 2009, in the UOG Library AV #1, at 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.


PTAC Symposium – September 4

The Guam Procurement Technical Assistance Center will host its 1st Annual Procurement Symposium on September 4, 2009 from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The keynote speaker for the event will be the President of the Association of Procurement Technical Assistance Centers, Mr. Joe Flynn, as well as contractors and vendors who will share their successes as prime or sub-contractors. Philippine Studies Lecture Series – Sept. 10

The University of Guam ’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences presents the first in the Philippine Studies Lecture Series featuring Dr. Clarita Carlos, a professor of Political Science at the University of the Philippines , on Thursday, September 10 at 6:00 p.m. in the CLASS Lecture Hall.

Dr. Carlos’s lecture is entitled, " US strategic policy in the Asia Pacific: A Philippine perspective." Dr. Carlos earned her doctorate in political science from the University of the Philippines and did post-doctoral work in Comparative Foreign Policy Analysis at the University of California Los Angeles as a Senior Fulbright Fellow; and post-doctoral work in Political Psychology at Cornell University in New York as a Fulbright Visiting Fellow. She has been a consultant on constitutional reforms, anti-corruption, security and defense issues to the Philippine Senate and Philippine House of Representatives for many years, and is a former president of the National Defense College . Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., light refreshments will be served. This event is made possible with a donation from the Nueva Ecija Family Association.

University of Guam Designated as Program Office for Guam/Micronesia Area Health Education Center
Receives $867K in Federal Funding

The University of Guam has been designated as the program office for the Guam/Micronesia Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in partnership with the University of Hawaii , the Guam Community College , the College of Micronesia, the College of the Marshall Islands , and the Pacific Islands Health Officers Association. The Department of Health and Human Services awarded $867K in funding to UOG for the first year of a three-year grant that supports the improvement of individual and community health throughout Micronesia by recruiting and training additional health care professionals.


UOG TRIO PROGRAMS RECEIVES $338K GRANT

The University of Guam TRIO Programs Educational Talent Search (ETS) received $338K from the US Department of Education for the 2009-2010 Academic Year. This funding is for the fifth and final year of the current grant funding cycle, bringing the total funding amount for the program to more than $1.3 million dollars over a five year period.

UOG & GDA Cultivate Banana Plants for Local Growers

Guam Department of Agriculture and the University of Guam are partnering to make clean planting stock available to farmers for local banana production.

Guam Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Recipient

Monica G. Cruz, a Business Administration Major (Double Concentration: Marketing, and Finance and Economics), was awarded the Guam Chamber of Commerce Dave J. Santos Scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year. This generous scholarship covers full tuition, fees, and books for both academic semesters. Monica will also serve as a paid intern at the Guam Chamber of Commerce (8/21/09 – May 2010). The Guam Chamber of Commerce launched this upgraded scholarship program last year, with Nathan Taimanglo named as the 2008-2009 Dave J. Santos Scholar.


Presentation

Lauren Biggin presented the results of her master’s thesis at the 7th annual Hawaiian international conference on education in January of 2009. The title of her presentation was, "An examination of the dissolution and loss of key relationships in a sample of Pacific Island students at the university of Guam : an attachment perspective". She earned her Master of Arts in Counseling from the University of Guam in May 2009. Her thesis advisor was Stephen Kane.


Hankuk University Students Study English at UOG
College students from Seoul 's Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) completed a 10-day English program at the University of Guam on August 28. This is the third consecutive year that Hankuk students have come to UOG to improve their English language skills.


SOE Alumni Update: 4th Annual Grant Writing Workshop

The 4th Annual Grant Writing Workshop will be held on Friday, September 18 and repeated on Saturday, September 19 from 8am to 5pm at the Multi-Purpose Building at Guam Community College. Cost is $25/person and includes workshop materials and lunch.

SOE Alumni Update: First IRA Meeting for SY 2009-2010


The first IRA meeting for SY 2009-2010 will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the Guam Reef Hotel where all monthly meetings will be held. The theme is Beyond the Horizon: Convention Highlights.

Grace Griffin, Margaret Asuncion, Rose Ferguson, and Frank Pangelinan will be presenting a variety of ideas from the 54th Annual North Central Convention held in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

All meetings include a free breakfast and door prizes. You will also have the opportunity to apply for an IRA grant, engage in professional development, earn credits, learn more about IRA's movement to GOING DIGITAL, and so much more!
